The Norwegian Minister in London informed that .1 ho British VGovcrn,mmt is prepared to waive a claim to Bouvet Island and will raise, no objection to its annexation by Norway, dJouvet is a small island live miles by four miles in the Antarctic Ocean, and one of the most ululated group of islands in the world. AYii.iiin a radius of 1000 nautical mih>s there is no other land. It was ill-sit sighted by the Frenchman, Capdin Bouvet, in 1739. It has frequently been rediscovered, notably by the Englishman. Captain Norris, in 1823. when the British flag was hoisted. The island has never been inhabited and has been seldom approached hy vessels. Bouvet Island, which British fair play and sense of justice, emphasises its importance. will he used as a permanent whaling base and Antarctic wireless station, which will shortly he constructed there.
