THE GENERAL ELECTION
LABOUR GAINS
The f4<-noral election took place yesterday throughout the Dominion. Fine weather prevailed in most places and the total voting recorded promises to ho large. As was predicted there were many surprises. Chief of these was the decline of the Deform support, which carried with it the defeat of three prominent Ministers —Flpns.; McLeod (Lands), Hawken (Agriculture) and Rolleston (Justice). Reform has olften been declared, the farming government, but the defeat of the Ministers holding portfolios closely identified with farming interests, do, not indicate appreciation for favours received. This is emphasised also by the return of other farming representatives, notably Mr Poison, opposing the Government. Mr Coates, whose speech (from the “Dominion” office, Wellington, was heard here last night by wireless, exhibited the right sporting spirit in addressing the noisy audience he had to face. The usual exuberance of spirit was noticeable on such occasions, and Mr Coates had a difficulty in making himself heard. But from what lie said he acknowledged the difficulties of the situation, and indicated his intention of doing the right thing. A special surprise, though hot unexpected in some quarters, was the advance of the Unitdd Party to a foremost position. This was a great compliment to Sir Joseph Ward in the circumstances. He had been appointed Leader olf the party only recently and his health was such that lie was able to speak only at Auckland and Dunedin. He had not spoken at Christchurch nor even at Wellington. The achievement of tho party in the circumstances of beginning late and not covering the territory as fully as-it should have done, indicates a notable swing in. the political pendulum which gives food for thought. The -United—party- was not held in any respect by either Reform or Labour, and each contended that a voto for a United candidate was a vote to keep one of the two main parties out. But the public 'didnot obey the behest, arid as-a result the nominal Liberal party has gained materially and will he the deciding 'factor in any negotiations. Labour had some notable victories, and accounted for some long associated with politics. In the city contests, Labour was. assisted greatly by the triangular fights. 1 Some prominent members of the party 'had..their numbers reduced, while the total of Labour members returned was not as large as Hie party hoped for. Practically all the prominent members of the party are again returned and with the accession of strength will endeavour :no doubt to have a firigfef in the political ( pie in the negotiations which must take place now to avoid another genera] election in order to assure a more definite advantage ior. a.-party or a fusion of parties, to rule under a direct mandate. As will be seen from the figures, there are several close results, and these will ho. altered at the official count when absbnt and postal votes <ue taken into account. ' Till thou an accu-; rate measurri ’of • the party strength would be speculation - largely and-may bo deferred for the present. WESTLAND SEAT. -
YESTERDAY’S POLLING
Q REFORM LOSE HEAVILY
UNITED PARTY’S SUCCESS
INCLUDING WESTLAND SEAT
When the poll closed last evenin'/ arrangements had been made to display the results at the “Guardian" Office. The public soon began to assemble, and the crowd increased to a. considerable volume as the evening proceeded. Tin- results were posted as they came fn on large blackboards, which were specially lit as darkness fell. In addition 2YA broadcasting station wns linked up, and the announcer could be heard over the air giving out the national re suits. Later, several speeches were heard from Wellington. The Westland results came through' steadily, Mr Seddon thanks to Hokitika, began with a good lead, 'flic earlier returns seemed to indicate lm would hold the seat. But when some of the substantial returns from the north .cam©, to hand, the complexion of affairs changed. By 8.30 o’clock it appeared that Mr O’Brien was the likely winner, and both candidates spoke briefly from the steps of the “Guardian” Office. . During the day the proceedings were very quiet' about town. The day was beautifully fine, and the people turned out well to vote. Several motor tars were .plying, principally on behalf of the licensing -poll. The proceedings both during the day and throughout the night were very orderly. There was a largo attendance at the Princess Theatre where the election results were also screened, and at the .conclusion of . the entertainment the audience made its way to the “Guardian” Office to glean the fuller particulars of the Dominion polling. The results were posted at the “Guardian’ Office up .to one o’clock this morning, when the wireless announcer gave it out that the figure's given were the latest, obtainable for the night. There is no doubt that the broadcasting arrangements greatly faciliated the dissemination of the hews far and wide, and it must have been quite a unique opportunity for those in the hack blocks to have the chance of learning the' results first hand so quickly instead of having to wait for the news to come through later by telegraph or mail. The licensing voting indicates that continuance generally has had renewed life. There is marked increase in the voting in its favour as the figures given in another column will indicate. THIS SPEECHES. . Speaking from the stops of /the “Guardian” office last evening; Air
Seddon said I bat the position at that time was not available, but lie bad to go to Greymoutli I hat night where the final results would lie available. He wished to acknowledge his appreciation of the support accorded him by the electors of the district. He thanked liis Committee and the people ol Hokitika and district for the hearty loyal support they had accorded him. He wished to thank them all for their support. He also wished to thank Mr O’Brien for the very fair manner in which lie had conducted tho campaign. He again thanked them for their support no matter what the result of the election may he. Mr James O’Brien followed shortly afterwards. Tie said the election was then still in doubt, but he seemed in a- better position, than at the same time at the previous election three years ago. The result was apparently very hopeful. He thanked them for the increase in votes of nearly 100 in Hokitika. He thanked all who had worked for him. He had to thank his opponent for the honest manly fight he had put up. Fie had to go to Grevmouth to hear the final result and would leave it to Air Neil "Warren to complete his thanks. He hoped it would not take as long as it did three years ago to decide the election. Whether elected or not he was prepared to carry the Labour banner in three years time. A Labour man cannot be defeated, he always comes •up smiling. He thanked them all again- and if successful would return again and personally thank them. About 9.45 o’clock when Mr O’Brien lead was given at 241, Mr N. Warren, who had been deputed by Mr O’Brien, spoke from the “Guardian” steps. Ho referred to his long association with Mr O’Brien’s candidature for Westland, and was pleased that he (Mr O’Brien) had been able again to win office. Air AYarren thought AVestlaiul would remain Labour now for keeps. He went on to say that the Labour candidate bad put up a good fight and deserved the win. and on behalf of Air O’Brien, ALP., Mr AYarren expressed grateful thanks to all supporters and workers. Hearty cheers were given for AL- O’Brien at the close of tho address.
