AIR C'OATKS SPEAKS. WELLINGTON. Nov. 14
The following statement was made by the Prime .Minister late to-night: “The people have had their opportunity and have expressed their views. We have worked hard, and have done all that, in our opinion, was best, always placing our country first. The immediate future, so far as the political parties are concerned, is difficult io estimate, and T can only hope that, whatever may be the outcome of the situation, our country will be the first consideration of Parliament. When the final figures are received I will take the first opportunity of consulting my colleagues. Naturally, I regret the result and I extend my sympathy to those good lei lows who have fought hard and who have gone down in the battle. I desire to thank all those who have loyally supported us, and I ask them to be of good cheer in their hour of trial. They may rely on us to do the right thing.” 'The scene when Mr Coates spoke was disgraceful among a section, who counted him out.
A! ANY IN FOR ALYL A’OTES. WELLINGTON, Nov. 15
A feature of Wellington polling was the large number of informal votes. In North there were 262, with only two names on the paper. In South, three names, 123; Central, three names, 136: East, three, 133; Suburbs. three. 102. One explanation offered is that voters were interested only in the licensing poll and never troubled to alter the torms for the political poll.
