The Nobel prize for literature for 102!) was awarded to Henri Mergson, and the 1!)2S prize was awarded to Sign’d Undset. a Norwegian woman novelist.
ART PICTURES AUCTIONED

The pictures of Alarczell Deuemes. the famous Budapest aid collection, were auctioned. The first day realised L‘123,1)00, including LI 1,300 for Elgreios “Immaculate Conception.”
AIRWAYS SUCCESS. LONDON, November 15
The Imperial Airways stated that then* wen* two years of success of the Cairo to Basra, a distance of 1200 miles, with no accidents, to the aeroplane service, justified an extension to Karachi about April, thence to Calcutta about October and thereafter to .Melbourne early in 1030.
II is probable seaplanes will ho utilised between India and Australia owing to the long sea stretches.
A WONDERFUL AGE. LONDON, Nov. 14
Obituary.—Aged 105 years, Airs Eleanor Tylden, who lived near Sandringham. On her hundredth birthday she was visited by Queens Alary and Alexandra and Hie Queens of Norway, Spain and Roumania. She had remarkable talents, memorising whole psalms accurately. She related century old happenings accurately. FRENCH CRITICISM OF U.S.A. BARIS, Nov. 13. There is considerable Press comment on the speeches of Air Coolidge and Mr Kellogg. “Lo Temps.” after a tribute to the Vmoriean war effort, which if says Franco has never belittled, adds: “It creates a painful impression when Mr Coolidge asserts that other nations’ losses must he discounted, because they have claimed reparations and 'increased their territory. France will never admit that sacrifices can lie counted solely in terms of money. Blood and gold cannot he weighed against one another.” ‘•| A . Temps” concludes: “Tt would hi* a mistake to expect America to initiate anything going beyond her
own interests.”

Replying to the request by the Alberta section of the Canadian Labour Party, that the Government abandoned the plan ,to purchase two new destroyers. Commander Hose. Director of Naval Services, stated the vessels were replacements, not additions. They will replace the obsolete Patriot and Patrician. The vessels are of a defensive character, with five thousand miles endurance limit.
