OVERSEER MILLNER’S REPORT
Sir, — I lmve the honour to report upon the progress ot" work during the month of October.
NORTHERN RIDING
Maintenance.—Kimiara Road was .dragged, watertables cleaned, and motor worn holes repaired between the Main Highway and Kumara Rorough. A portion of Arahura Valley Road was repaired with gravel carted from the river bed below Hungerford’s Bridge but wet weather prevented the lorries being used for gravel haulage for more than one day. The Roadman attended to minor repairs to motor worn holes on One Mile and Arahura Valley Roads, also to the construction of a portion ol the drain required to prevent storm water crossing the road below Palmer’s Creek Bridge, No 1 Humphreys Road and to the construction of two twelve inch diameter cow-relc pipe culverts on Spencer Road.
CENTRAL RIDING
Secondary Highways.—Lake Kaniori Road whi'h is getting out of order beyond Coal Creek owing to the continued heavy rainfall, was graded for two miles in length dragged with I lie heavy road drag for two miles, and roll'd with the ten ton roller to solidify loose materia! graded on to the toudwav for two miles forty links. Encroaching scrub and other growth was cleared at I Ik* curves to allow motorists a clear vision of anproaching traffic for a total length of TOO links. Motor worn holes and ruts were repaired over a distance of two miles, repairs absorbing *lO cubic yards of gravel. Water,tables were (leaned over a distance of S chains, and a ssibsidonce on the lower edge of the roadway at Slip ITill filled in and repaired with gravel, the work will again subside caused in a great measure by the leakage from the pipes of the Borough water service. Coal Creek Hill Widening. The abrupt bend, on the narrow portion of road on the eastern slope of Coal Creek was widened a distance of 25F links, and the bank battered and watertables cleaned a -further distance of 52 links. Traffic can now pass in safety at this point, which will he trraduallv improved by ,<]io removal of gravel from the high portion of hank for road repairing Purposes.
Slip Hill Widening. The old stone retaining wall beyond the crest of the hill which has gradually subsided toward the roadway, blocking watertnldes. was romvoed and replaced after the road was widened a distance of 75 links. This work will be continued a further distance of 250 links.
I.OWKR KOKATAHI ROAD
Lower Kokatahi Pond Drainage was completed the specified distance of one mile, fourteen chains, so'-onty-fivo links, the Contractor, A. Burke, making a good job throughout. T]k> lower portion of roadway was graded a. distance of 1 mile -10 chains, and well rolled with ’the ten ton roller over the same distance. Motor worn holes were repaired with gravel, 3-17 ouhio yards of gravel being used for the purpose and roadside dumps replenished with "203 cubic yards of gravel, a washout on a culvert on fvoiterangi Bond was filled in to tlm original height of roadway. Two defective planks 10 feet by 3 x 4 on Kokatahi Diver Bridge were remov ed and replaced with sound timber. Oropo’s Bond was graded for one mile in length and depressions repaired with 5 cubic yards of gravel. The County lorry carted 1000 superficial feet of S x I plunking for renewal of decking on Duck Creek Bridge No. i. Station Bond Extension. The formation is completed Ihe specified distance of 11 chains, a tractor, plough and the County grader being used with great success, resulting in a first class job throughout.
MAINTENANCE
Repairs were effected to Ward Road In- dragging and gravelling had ttortions of the fiat beyond the bridge Alotor worn holes wore filled on South Hokitika ilnd .A rt. hurst own Roads, a (leDressicn filled on Bine Spur Road. Wntortnbles cleaned on Blue Spur and Jlokitfka-Hau Man Roads and defective covering removed from a culvert on Sunny Right Road, Bladier’s Road was graded with the large road grader and all the outer accumulated grass and other growth removed to allow a clearance of drainage. SOUTHER X RIDING. K aka pot alii Bridge Protection. A portion of the balance remaining from this grant was -expended in the removal of a quanity of stone from the river heach on the southern side of the stream to sallow the floods to s-'-’r a channel, to divert the current from the tipper end of the work which is standing all floods without the slightest damage, Oknritn Road Bridges. Repairs and renewals werp completed to Okarito Road Bridges under the direction of H. Reynolds. Iho concrete pipe culverts are tbeing constructed during the present month. MAINTENANCE. Repairs were effected to Detonr, Wataroa Flat, and Richardson Roads, four new stringers placed in one of
the bridges on Waitalia Beach Road, a new culvert and approaches almost completed on Wanganui Elat, repairs effected to Petersen’s and Wanganui Flat Roads, and concrete pipes constructed in readiness for improvement of the open crossings on Wanganui Elat Road. The County lorries carted a quantity of timber to Harihari. concrete pipes to Okarito Road and Wnlaroa .Flat Road and pile driving gear and pile shoes to Little Wnga--11 ui River in readiness to commence work at Little Wanganui River Protection.
