COLOURED CREW
OX N.Z. GOVERNMENT STEAMEE WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. ]n connection with the statements by tite Seamen's Fiuon regarding the crew of the Maui Pornare. it is officially stated that although the wages of the natives of the Pacific Islands averaged in the vicinity of £-1 per month, it was decided that should the native crew prove ellicient. they la* paid wages more on a par with the wages obtained by Xew Zealand seamen. The Maui Pont tire is now entirely staffed with a native crew. and they are proving surprisingly efficient. In accordance with Mr Coates’ statement, the wages of those men have been rapidly increased as they became qualified, and have far exceeded the rate submitted by the Seamen’s Union. In several instances, the wages paid the Niuean crew is equivalent to and in one instance in excess, of the rates payable to Europeans under the awards.
