During the first seventy-two hours of the eruption, the lnv:i stream covoreii nine miles, but now it is advancing at a rate of three hundred feet daily, over Hatter land in the vicinity of the sea. The Government has started a boat service occupying five hours between Missia and Catania, as the railway is cut. Engineers are exploding a series of mines thus forming huge canals to the sea.
