I beg to report the following work was carried out during the month. The footpath in Stafford Street in front of Mr Preston’s was gravelled between Rolleston and Davie Streets, the distance being five chains. Brittan Street footpath between Stafford and Hampden Streets was cleaned and gravelled if or a distance of three chains. Hampden Street footpath between Hall and Brittan Street was chipped and gravelled for four chains, and a chain in Hall Street. A section in Beale,v Street between Hampden and Park Streets was also gravelled. (travel was laid in front of the bowling green and at Macklcy’s garage. The drain in Sewell Street collapsed near the police station which was repaired. Stafford Street drain fell in at the corner of Stafford and Sewell ■Streets and was repaired.

Street crossings were put in at the following places, corners of Hamilton and Sewell, Hamilton and Tattered (both sides), Hamilton and Revel Streets (both sides). Camp and Revel! Streets (both sides). Concrete domes were laid in Hamilton, Weld and Etaliford Streets. A fireplug was put in at Mrs Iliillidav’s in Hampden Street. On the (itb the water pipe line carried away through the siding slipping away on Slip Hill, and six pipes pulled out. One was broken which required a new one in its place, while an iron pipe hi the syphon about two milts from tlie Lake rusted through, which we repaired. Leaks were repaired on the line from the lake and seveial about town.

The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was ten feet. WATER SUPPLY ON CASS SQUARE

In regard to the supply of water for the Eire Brigade demonstration to he held in February, 1929, I submit the following proposal. The distance to lav pipes from the fire plug at present in Cass Square t connect with the pipes in Mall Street i,t the corner of Weld Street is a little over three chains, and as we have about four chains of six inch iron pipe in stock, I would suggest connecting the two dead ends, which form a eiieuit. This, I consider, would be the cheapest and most satisfactory wa,\. giving full pressure and doing away with shock. When connected the line will have to he tested as I understand the pipes now laying in the square have been laid for a considerable mini her of years, and have not been in use. hut I don’t think they will cause r

great deal of trouble, as being constantly wet and underground, should be in Fair condition.—Received ; and re lerred to Fire Brigade for approval.

M,r Evans moved that the lowi Clerk arrange to have necessary repairs to the Free Public Library build jug. Seconded by Air Heenan and carried.

.Mr Heenan suggested that the Council should employ two extra permanent men on borough works. Mr King supported and this course was agreed to to carry out Christmas cleaning. The Council rose at 8.15 p.m.
