AFTER TIMBER MARKET
(United Service.)
MONTREAL. November S
An Ottawa dispatch to tlie Oa/.eno says: The .Minister for Trade. Mr -Malcolm, will leave Vancouver next week to examine the possibilities ol a direct steamship service between Western Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and :fc!so to examine the advisability of subsidising a service to the West Coast of South America. It is believed that trade with these countries will he substantially increased. ’The British Coi umbia lumber merchants ieel that they could secure a larger sliare the Australian business if the Canadian Colonial steamship would restore a direct service, as formerly given between Vancouver and the antipodes, especially as there is a possibility ol the trade agreement between Canada and Australia being extended. At the present time the lumber interests in Washington, Oregon, and California States have an advantage over the British Columbia lumber men by reason of a better steamship service and the Australian tariff which favours the redwoods of California against British Columbia cedar.
