Several incipient fires on the ci amistands at Addington on Thursday caused some excitement among the spectators of the races. The 'outbreaks were apparently due to cigarette butts dropped on the stands, the high northei > wind causing them to set lire to the *V woodwork. One outbreak occurred in the new stand and one in the middle stand, it being necessary in the latter case to remove a sheet of iron to permit of water being poured on the fire A third outbreak occurred in the main stand in the inside enclosure. In no case was the outbreak of sufficient proportions to warrant the calling of the Fire Brigade. On the opening day of •w the Addington meeting two small ontbreaks of fire occurred in the now stand.
