LIQUOR AT SMOKE CONCERT

On the authority of a case, Erickson v. Caltciianch, Air Page S.AI. to-clav in a reserved judgment hold it was unlawful to provide liquor at a smoke concert and make a charge for admission, this being tantamount to selling liquor without a license. The case was against the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Pukerua Cricket Club in connection with a. smoke concert held last April ar which liquor was included in the refreshments provided, and there was an admission charge of ss.
Counsel said there had not been any indication from, the authorities that the practice was illegal.. Smoke concerts were held quite openly hv almost all sports bodies during the winter and the defendants acted in quite good faith.
The Magistrate held there should he only one penalty, and this fell on the Treasurer who was fined Cl and costs £1 Bs.
