The King unknowingly made the first talkie during liis speech at the opening of the Newcastle bridge. An enterprising American news reel man filmed the scene and speech and had it sent to America and developed. It is stated a remarkable reproduction was obtained. The King was invited to hear the film and then permission was asked to release it for the theatres.

Search proceedings were instituted for Mrs Margaret Olive Johnson, a member of the Salvation Army and well known in Essex, who disappeared the day before. According to hoi statement, she was to inherit a fortune of seventy-four thousand sterling from an Australian relative. Some months ago she announced the good fortune coming to her and stated she proposed expending portion in furthering religious work. She ordered a luxurious motor car, engaged a chaffeur and commissioned a firm to construct four houses, one of which she placed at the disposal of Salvation Army offiers. Meantime it was stated she obtained advances of money to carry on until her inheritance arrived.

MUNICIPAL AIR PORT. LONDON, Nov. 6,

The Air Ministry sanctioned the establishment of Britain’s first municipal air port at Manchester, using Chattmoss level expanse of 26 acres, seven miles from the city. It is described as one of the best natural aerodromes in the country. The Lord Mayor declares:—“We iwant a direct service to the Continent. We won’t be satisfied with linking up with Croydon.” *
