At the request of the Grey mouth Ohamjxer of Commerce the District Traffic Manager of Hallways has furnished a return showing the number of head of stock railed from the various stations between Hokitika and (Him for the year ending March 31st. 1928. The return shows that 49,019 sheep and pigs and 2079 cattle and calves were dealt with during the year and makes an interesting contrast when compared with the position which obtained. a little more than a decade ago when stock was conveyed to Arthur’s Pass, and driven over the Otira Gorge to provide meat for Greymouth. The fact that the West Coast not only provides all the meat that its inhabitants require, hut also exports stock in such large numbers, indicates the strides being made in the pastoral industry, and augurs well for future expansion.
