Bearing out earlier predictions, the first election reports indicate unusually heavy polling in all parts of the United States, with an exceptionally large female vote.

The first intimation of disorder came from AVest Virginia where the Governor ordered State troops to the mining area to forestall possible mob violence. Chicago, however, despite fifteen thousand special guards, remained calm for the first- three hours, which almost constitutes a record, while at Now York nine thousand guards wore also not called upon to quell any disturbance.

An amusing incident occurred in one New York village, indicating the intense interest the campaign had aroused, when the authorities sounded the fire alarm at short intervals a'ltei daybreak, in order to make sure that voters would take advantage of the six o’clock iopening of the polls.
