POLITICAL

Mr -J. O'Brien addressed a meeting of electors at the lotara Hall on Saturday night, between 70 and 80 persons being present. Mr H. Osmers (Deputy Mayor) occupied the chair and briefly introduced the speaker. Mr O’Brien spoke for about two hours, his address being on similar lines to ihosc already reported elsewhere. He received a very attentive hearing, several questions being asked at tin* close of the address, his replies appearing to give satisfaction.

Mr Bridgman moved a vote of thanks to the candidate for his address and that this meeting considers him a lit and proper person to represent them in Parliament. Mr .John Rea seconded, which was carried unanimously.

Mr O’Brien thanked those present for the patient hearing accorded him and for their vote of thanks and confidence.

A vote of thanks to the chair mu eluded the meeting.

alarm of fire

0„ Saturday afternoon shortly alter 2 o’clock the fire hell rang an alarm when it was found a file had started in a shop in Aylmer Street, owned by Mr A. W. I’cehles. lln Brigade were on the scene within two munites and quickly extinguished the flames. The fire had a good start when discovered and had it a start of another few minutes may have proved rather serious.

The building had not been entered f or several days and it is difficult to imagine how the lire started especially as the seat of the lire was right in the building some 10 or 12 teet from the door.

Tim building itself did not suffer much damage but a considerable amount of stock was burned.
