GENERAL ELECTION
AIR SKDDOX'S CAMPAIGN
]\| r T. K. V. Scddon. United Party candidate for Westland, had a busy day on Saturday in fiirlhernnce of his l«)l»tical campaign in the pn vnt fleet ion. Mr Sodden proceeded to Groymouth h v the first train and at 11.30 oclock spoke at the Despatch Foundry to the employees, receiving a good hearing. Mr A. ('. Kilpatrick occupied the chair. Mr Sodden spoke for about 20 minutes on matters of interest to the industry with which the Found y is connected, and at the cio.s- of his speech received vote of thanks and confidence on the motion of Mr i. H. Collins, seconded by the Chairman. Mr Scddon returned to Hokitika by the afternoon train, and mootings at Hiinu. 'Woodstock and Kanieri occupied the evening, the proceedings extending till about 10.30 o clock.
At Rimu .Mr A. Clifton presidc<l o>vcr ;i fair meeting held in the early evening in the Town Hall. Air Scddon spoke on mining, milling and other matters, and was plied at the close with a number of questions. A vote of thanks and confidence was accorded the candidate on the motion of Mr AY. Boyd, seconded by Air C. O'Connor. One of the questions put to Air Soddon at Hinni was in regard to dental services at private schools. Air Scddon in reply, said that this matter had'boon brought up in the House hv Air Lee, the He form member for Oamaru. and it had been supported generally by members, including himself. Immediately afterwards at AUoodstoek Hall, Air Seddnn faced another audience, Afr E. A. Molls, County Chairman, being in the chair. During the proceedings of the political address some of the questioners from the Hiniu meeting attended, and were the cause of some interruption to the proceedings. When question time came, the visitors renewed their questions in varying form, and there was a good deal of noise and interruption, the proceedings at times being lively. The questioners were very persistent and would not accept replies or explanations. The Chairman’s appeal for fairplay was also resultless. However, the organised opposition as it appeared to he. gradually wore down when a vote oi thanks and confidence was accorded ATr Scddon on the motion of Afr E. Stoop, seconded by Afr H. C. AY ells. Following the meeting something of a fracas occurred in the hall between two of the audience, there being " dispute about individual war service. The presence of a member of the police force prevented matters going too far. The primary cause of the disturbance appeared to bo the excited state of some of the visitors who were evidently bent on creating a diversion, both at the Rimu meeting and the AA’oodstock meeting. Afr Scddon. however, with his usual force of oha.aetm- bad no difficulty in getting through both meetings satisfactorily, notwithstanding that he gave the hecklers some pointed replies to their interjections and persistent questions.
The protracted proceedings at Woodstock. delayed the commencement- of the meeting at Kanicri hy a full halfhour. Mr Seddon apologised for his late arrival, explaining the cause to an attendance of 50 or (10 people who had waited till after 0 o’clock. Mr i. "R. Ohesterman, M.O.C. ahly presided, and Mir Seddon spoke for a haul, an hour. His speech covered some of the ground previously traversed, hut ho dealt with various matters of interest. One 'Hicstion was asked, and a very puiot and orderly meeting closed with a vole of thanks and eonfiden e in Mr Seddon. moved hy Mr 1). .T. Hutchison and seconded by Mr J. Campbell.
