ENGLAND V. NEW ZEALAND

AUCKLAND. Nov. 4. The first day’s play of the lawn tennis test match between New Zealand and England took place to-dav in beautiful weather. Four singles and two doubles matches were played, England winning three of the singles and both of the doubles, and New Zealand winning one single. The details are (England being mentioned first in each case); —
Singles: H. AY. Austin beat E. AY. Bartlett 6 —4, 6—o; E. Higgs lost to D. G. France 4—o, o—7; J. C. Gregory beat G. Ollivicr G—3, G—2: T. G. Collins beat N. AVilson 4—G, G—3, 6—l.
Doubles; Austin and Gregory boat Bartlett and AA’ilson G—2. 6—2; Higgs and Collins beat Ollivier and Franco 6—B, o—l, 6—2.
