Natives on the coast between O 1 tiki and Cape Runaway who use whaleboats for fishing purposes always keep a lookout for whales going along the coast, and occasionally are fortunate enough to .secure a catch. The .Maoris at Whiiianga. a small native ’.set tlenient up the coast, are mow celebrating a successful whaling expedition. Two whales, a cow and a calf, were observed on Sunday, and the Natives set out in their whaleboats, equipped with harpoons, with the intention of capturing them. They linrpo nod the calf first: the mother forced the little whale down until it disappeared from view, and the Natives tliecpup'i-;n attaPkc.l the row. which they successfully harpooned and hauled to the beach. Since the capture the amateur whalers have been busily engaged in cutting tip the blubber and boiling it down.
