The difficulty about sending the ‘Elsie to sea at present is considered insuperable, and she will remain in port pending negotiations now for acquiring a small steamer considered to be suitable for the service. The negotiations are being advanced as rapidly as possible. The directors of the Company regret the position, as knowing the plight of the settlers at Okiiru it is realised how important it is to make a connection as soon as possible, hut it seems likely that the steps now being taken will in the end he more expeditious and really more satisfactory all round.

Well over 100 applications for probationersliip to the teaching profession were received by the Canterbury Education Board. Wednesday was the date of, closing but it is expected that there will be many more applications. Preference will be given to candidates who have passed the matriculation or a higher examination, who are physically sound, and whose personality indicates that they will make successful teachers.
Star Stranger was scratched for tho New Zealand Cup at 10.50 a.m. on Wednesday. He registered a good gallop over a mile and a quarter on Tuesday morning greatly pleasing his connections. Later in the day, however, one of his forelegs filled slightly, and as it was unwise to keep him going his withdrawal from the Cup was decided on. The defection of Star Stranger will greatly weaken the field for the twomile race, for which lie was one of the popular fancies.
By last evening’s train from Christchurch, Mr AV. Searle received a special lino of purebred dairy stock consisting of three heifers and a hull from the Friesian herd of Air J. J. Royd, of Kendulton. The cattle are for Mr Searle’s dairy farm at Harihari and went on hv last night’s train to Ross en route. It is pleasing to know of a further addition to the high quality stock already in the district. These Eriesia-ns are from a fine stock with records up to Tilths of butter stock’. The bull is a fine stamp and the breeder has recommended him as a. fine animal for the purpose, it having an ancestry that nothing on the Coast can equal. Mr Searle is to. he complimented on this fine addition to his dairy herd.
