MELBOURNE, November 1. There was muggy. threatening weather to-day. for the start of the match. England v. Victoria. The wicket was good. Wood fill l won the toss and hatted.
Sensational howling was exhibited by Larwood, who was swinging the ball. He had taken three wickets for thirty-four runs at lunch, when the total was sixty runs for three wickets. Tate also showed glimpses ol his best form. Rain fell during the luncheon hour, and the captains agreed that the wicket should he covered. The game was resumed at three o’clock, when there was some more sensational howling by Larwood, who took three wickets in Ifour halls in a maiden over. ..Woodfull was hatting defiantly, hoi scoring was difficult. All of the howlers had a good length. At the close of play the \ ictorians had lost nine wickefs for IG3 runs. After tea. Larwood got his seventh wicket, Blackie making a poor strokm Rain fell at *1.30, and this caused another adjournment the players being off the field for half an hour. Ihe weather had then turned very cold. Woodfull scored fifty runs in I>o minutes. Although hampered by the greasy ball ifor some time, the howlers were very accurate, and scoring was di Tien It'. Ironmonger made the only sixer ' Larwood was in fine fettle, and he was faster than he was at Adelaide, swerving deceptively. 'Woodfull was unwell. The Victorians’ first hundred came in 02 minutes. In the Sheffield Shield match, N.S.W. v. Queensland, New South Wales made 401 Ifor four wickets in the second innings. They thus defeated Quecnslamt I,v six wickets and three runs.
