FIVE CHARGES

BANK ACCOUNTANT BEFORE COURT.

NAPIER, Oct. 26. Hercules Robert Hunter, accountant of the Bank of New Zealand, Napier, appeared before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., in the Napier Police Court this morning to face five charges. He was charged firstly that on July 13 last at Napier lie made a false document, to wit a lodgment slip on the Bank of New Zealand, Napier, of a cheque for the su:m of £277 2s 6d drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Sydney, the drawers of the said cheque purporting to be Hunters and Sons, of Sydney, then knowing the said document to be false and having the intention that it should be acted upon as genuine, thereby committing forgery. The second charge, dated July 17, was exactly similar to the first but related to a cheque for the sum of £373 17s 6d. He was further charged that on July 13 at Napier, in incurring a liabilty to the Bank of New Zealand lie did obtain credit to the amount of £277 2s 6d by means of fraud, to wit, lodgment of a cheque for the sum of. £277 2s 6d; drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Sydney, the drawers of the said cheque being falsely purported to be Hunter and Sons, whereas the said cheque was,' as a 'fact, drawn by the said Hercules Robert Hunter, as administrator of the estate of Mable E. Hunter, deceased, and further, the said Hercules Robert Hunter, having lodged the said cheque with the bank at Napier to his account did by deceit abstract the said cheque from the custody of the bank. The fourth charge was silmilar to the third, having relation to a cheque for £372 1/s fid, the date being July 17. The final charge was that on July 17 and on divers dates between July 17 and August 8-'he did with intent to defraud obtain divers sums of money, amounting in the whole to the sum of £372 17s fid, from the Bank of New Zealand by false pretences, to wit, by valueless cheques.

Detective Sergeant Butler conducted the prosecution and Mr M. L. Gleesoai appeared for accused. After the hearing of lengthy evidence accused was committed for trial to the Supreme Court.
