CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 29. The tennis match, South Island v. Great Britain, began this morning at Wiiljding; Park in fine weather and courts in good order. Singles.—D. F. Glanville (South Island) beat E. Higgs (L—2, 6r^2.; ; .
R.. A. Guy (South Island) lost to I. G. Collins o—6, I—6. In the first set Glanville was always superior, owing to greater steadiness. He played Higgs fast servicewonderfully well, picking it tip on the backhand for good length returns, which the English player often netted. In the second set Higgs was ' 'more attractive and it looked at one stage as if he would strike his true form, but he either fell N into errors or was forced into them, kept going consistently particularly on the backhand and won a notable victory. Collins was always too good for Guy, the Dunedin player. / He revealed uncanny anticipation, superior eourtcraft and hard clean hitting, alternated with heavy chops. Guy was kept on the run and was continually- outclassed. Collins impressed critics 'by his all-round brilliancy. O. Angus (South Island) lost to. H. W. Austin 3-6, 4-6.
G. Ollivier (South Island) beat J. C. Gregory 8-6, 6-3. • -, • ' ' The New Zealaud champion Ollivier fought magnificently to win a determined contest agaiHst Dr Gregory. Ollivier’s tricky little shots frequently proved disconcerting to the visitor. He returned Gregory’s scorching drives with ease and then scored with rattling placements first into one corner ar.d then into the other. Leading at one time in the first set 5-1, lie was hard pressed for a period by Gregory s tenacity, but he managed to retain the ' leqd and won 8-6, taking the second at 6-3. 'V : ’ , :V 'v;.'. V A splendid exhibition was provided by Austin and Angus. • The Englishman started searching for corne.rsyhoik forehand and'backhand, and it was oovious that if he could keep it tip at that speed no New Zealand colt could see it out. He concealed the direction with beautiful, sweeping, drives and when Angus lobbed he often put away a clean winner. Angus made some brilliant recoveries in the second set, fighting gamely, but He was mostly forced into a big enough margin-. Of errors to make him lose tjie rally.. Austin’s jollying was superb';
