THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I had your newspapers among my mail 911 my return home the other day: your member, Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, and myself have had a big fight to get the Great South Road going, but I think the matter is now settled, and that in the near future South Westland and Otago will soon he linked up. You have secured £ISOO on account. I have got £I,OOO on account from this end, and in my opinion the job will go on now till finished, and a good wheeltrack established between the Franz “Josef and Wannka. Then we will have something to brag about as a tourist trip by motor—the finest in the world.

Since the Prime Minister did the journey on horseback, "Mr Seddon and myself have been hammering away at the job along with your Progress League and the Otago Progress League. The Right Hon. Mr Coates, Leing convinced my personal knowledge made jt easier for us: now the Hon. K. S. Williams informs me he is to do the trip early in 1929. I am not seeking election again hut Mr Coates expects me to retain my interest in a personal way in Wakntipu and I may still he useful to you, and if so you can depend I will do my best. In audition to the £I,OOO for a wheel track, Lake Hawea to Makarorri, I got substantial votes to maintain the track from Makarora to the Haast saddle, and I notice Air Seddon got similar votes for the track in his country vest of Haast Pass. I am, etc., J AMES HORN.

[Mr Horn is the member for Wakatipu in the Parliament now expii ing. hut is not seeking re-election. Ed. G-]
