ARBITRATION COURT

COMPENSATION CASES,

GREYMOUTH, October 27

A sitting of the Arbitration Court was held yesterday at Greymouth. His Honour, Mr Justice Fraser presided, associated with him being Messrs G. T. Booth (Employers’ Assessor), A. L. Monteith (Employees’ Assessor), and J. A. Gilniour (Registrar). Julia Marie Casey claimed £IOOO compensation from the Grey County Council, in respect of the loss of her brother, the late Patrick Joesph Case v and £25 for .funeral expenses. The Court held that she was dependent upon deceased. There was anomaly, however, that if the other brother died, plaintiff -could claim another £IOOO. The Court was not concerned with anomalies, however, but merely administered the law as it existed. Plaintiff had kept the house efficiently for considerably less than it might have cost otherwise. Judgment would be . awarded plaintiff for the amount claimed. £IOOO with £25 for the funeral and £l2 12s costs.

Frank Tinning, formerly employed by the Grey Valley Colliery Coy. Ltd. claimed compensation in respect of injuries received while working at the Dobson mine.

The Court stated full compensation (£2 19s 8d) would be allowed from the date of the accident to that otf the trial and till four months after the operation. Then for the next eight months it would be correspondingly reduced—--24 per cent, and ten per cent, for the remainder of t|ie period during which the legal obligation to pay compensation lasted (a total of 251 weeks from the time of the accident). Court costs amounted to £lO 10s, and witnesses’ expenses £2 2s each, plus travelling expenses, would he allowed, a total of £176 if or compensation, pus £l4 14s for expenses.
