Signed— High Alas ter, Black Hand Society.’’ This was contained in a letter found in. the possession of Geoffrey Norman Butcher, motor mechanic, of Wellington, who was' charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with being intoxicated while- in charge of a car, and with failing to have a .silencer attached to the exhaust.
Evidence was given that Butcher raced his car on the highways near .Miirton on Sunday, the machine making a tremendous roar. Residents thought an aeroplane was in the vicinity. Butcher admitted several previous convictions for speeding. He said the letter referred to was received some time ago. Several such letters had been sent to motorists in Wellington.
]hitcher was fined £lO and Ins license was cancelled on the major charge. Tie was fined £o for failing to have a silencer attached.
