J. H. E. S.
(By S. G. August in the ‘Aussie.”)
/{The initials suggest- hieroglyphics and proclaim tjie'identity, of J. H. E. SclircSder, M.A., associate .editor of the “Christchurch Sun,”' and • the Grand Pan jan drum .of that daily’s weekly book page. As the “Auckland Sun” uses much of its parent’s literary matter the pen-initials are well known to both islands. The critic is a West Coastite and lies jbeen for years a teacher and lecturer. His Euglishnoss and erudition literary and political, together with an ability to be wise, witty, ironic, and profound, by turns suggest him as the sort of journalist rare in ErrZed eminently suited to fill a position on the staff of a paper like the “London Spectator,” or lf New Statesman.”
-His “The Wooden Horse” column is always worth reading twice and holding for reference. The “Sun” lias discovered much talent and “J.H.E.S.” represents a fair share of that wealth.
