LONDON TORNADO

TRAIL OF WRECKAGE

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).

LONDON, October 23

An extraordinary whirlwind storm struck the Mayfair, Piccadilly, and Soho regions of London last night, and left a trail of wreckage. A number of taxicabs were blown over, while heavy omnibuses rocked like ships in a storm. People were blown down, and one policeman was hurled across Piccadilly. Streets were littered with fallen tiles, chimney pots, and shop signs. The Unemployment Exchange in Poland Street was unroofed, and the police have closed the street with bai - ricades.

The wind is described as having been a tornado on a small scale. It scattered everything movable. Amazing numbers of thick plate-glass windows were smashed. One old news-vendor was lifted bodily and deposited on the roadway. Many were injured, mostly slightly. Earlier in the evening there was torrential rain and Hoods.
