SERIOUS. FIRE. (Australian Press Association). (United Service). SYDNEY, Oct. 23. A fire in the township of Ulmara, near Grafton, to-day destroyed eight shops and dwellings. The damage is heavy.
THE AUSTRALIA. NO WELCOME TO SYDNEY. (Received this day at 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 23. The flagship Austi'alia arrived and berthed at Circular Quay, Sydney, at 5.35 this morning. The sun was just rising. About seventy relatives and friends of the crew waved handkerchief!;, otherwise there was no demonstration. Even passing ferry boats were silent. The Australia’s- crew must have wondered whether they were in a foreign port, so painfully flat and unostentatious was their homecoming to the largest city of the Commonwealth. There will be a public inspection in the next few days.
PROFIT SHARING. SYDNEY, October 22. Although not involved in the recent waterfront trouble, James Patrick and Company have embarked on a profitsharing system with the crews of their two coastal vessels, Corrimal and Cadcross. The basis of the scheme is not disclosed, but it has been accepted by the crews who are happy about it. All are ex-naval men. . i CYCLONIC STORM. SYDNEY, October 22. During a cyclonic storm at Walgett, dwellings were unroofed in all diiections and telegraph poles and tiees brought down in great numbers. The wind velocity was sixty miles.
GEARY RECOVERING. PERTH, October 22. Geary, the English cricketer whose nose was broken on Saturday, is recovering and has left the hospital. MR BRUCE HECKLED. ADELAIDE, October 22. Mr Bruce had a stormy reception and was heckled right through his address, which dealt with industrial affairs and the waterside strike. Eventually he was counted out. Mr Bruce emphatically denied he was bringing foreigners into the country to displace Australian workmen.
