The death is reported at his residence, Auckland, of Mr John Milne, managing director for Messrs Chambers and Son, Ltd., engineers. Deceased, who was 03 years of age, was manager of the firm’s Wellington branch, before being appointed managing director. •He made frequent visits to and was well known on the West Co ast. He had not been in the best of health recently, but bis death came as a surprise. He is survived by bis widow and family.

The many friends in this district ol Mr Fred Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief of the Publio Works Department, will hear with sincere regret of the death of his wife, which took place at Wellington this morning after a long illness. A young family are left with the father to mourn their loss.
The members of the Presbyterian Choir made a presentation on Thursday evening to Air A. G. Pdkington (choirmaster) of a handsome tea service, in appreciation of his services for a considerable time past. The gathering took place at the residence of Mrs Pilkington, ;a pleasant hour being spent.
A Wellington press wire states : The Chief Justice, Sir Charles Skerrett., continues to make good progress towards recovery from the effects of -his recent operation, and so satisfactory does his medical adviser (Sir Donald McGavin) consider his condition, that the issue’ of further bulletins is considered to be unnecessary.
Tennis enthusiasts will he well provided for at Kanieri on Monday with the opening of the Tennis season there and the Annual Ball in the evening. Given a fine day and night the events should pass off most successfully. For the ball in the evening complete arrangements have been made, which should surpass any previous efforts.
A novel turn was given to a case in tile Magistrate’s Court at Westport, in connection with the taking of imported game. A hare had been taken from defendant and placed in a cool storage in preparation for the Court’s hearing. However, when the hare was wanted it had mysteriously disappeared, and the cool store men disclaimed any knowledge concerning it. The Magistrate dismissed the case.
The Hokitika bowling green will be open for practice from Alonday next, when the weather is favourable. The formal opening ceremony has been set down for Saturday, Nov. 3rd., so as not to clash with the final day of the Golf Club on Saturday next. The green will he available to members each evening, and members are advised to attend and get their eye in for the opening match which will he the usual one, President v. Vice-President.
