(By Telegraph—Press Association)
MELBOURNE, Oct. 18
Wharf labourers to-day struggled in a queue to obtain licenses, which were issued at a terrific rate at the Customs House.
No unionists, however, were employed to-day to work general cargo. The shipping representatives are making it clear that volunteers are to have their preference. The owners have further announced that they intended to retain all the volunteers who wished to remain, whether seamen or wharf men. The owners are now preparing to recommi''Kion idle passenger ships. The Union wharfmen will he freely picked up next week. The Victorian seamen to-day decided in favour of a resumption, after severely criticising the wharfmen for giving up the fight “before there was any need.” A red ilag bearing the words “No Surrender!” is flying from the building of the Port Phillip Stevedores’ Association at Port Melbourne.
Special police are posted at all wharves, hut there has been no disturbance. BRISBANE. Oct. IS. There was an. unexpected rush by union wharfmen for licenses to-day. Officially the strike is still on, hut actually the dispute locally has ended.
