Illuminating passages occur in the intimate papers of Colonel House, which are being published in November, among entries dates of A larch 1919 one records the visit olf \ iscount Cliinda and Baron Ala kino, who complained they were having no end oi trouble with Hughes, who would not consent to anything satisfying to Japan’s desires and. threatened if anything wore passed by the committee lie would bring the matter up at the pieuary conference and raise a storm of protest in the Dominions and western United States. Colonel House reveals occasionally sharp clashes oi opinion with Hughes on the subject ol the annexation of the German colonies. The Dominion Premier insisted the colonies were conquered by them and should be annexed. Air Hughes and i(J .i- Massey demanded the colonies south of the equator as necessary to the protection of those dominions. \ few davs later Colonel House records how “Sir Robert Cecil and my selldiscussed the Colonial Question and agreed absolutely, and strangely enough, coincident therewith. The, President was having a first class row with Air Lloyd George. Al. Clemenceau and Alessrs Hughes and Alaxsey, and it looked as though the whole thing had gone to pot. However, the row may Jo some good in ml teach them a lesson,”
The' last reference to Mr Hughes is on April H.i. 191 9. in which Colonel House .says a fear persisted up to the Inst month, that Hughes would make an anti-Legion speech, hut everything passed almost before the Conference could catch its breath.
