DEATH FROM A FALL. (By Telegraph—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16. A retired farmer named Joseph Sommers fell from a first storey window of the Christchurch Hospital on Friday. His injuries included a broken leg and aurasions to the face. Sommers was a patient, having been admitted on July 21st. suffering from haemorrhage of the brain. He was pa years or age. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. WHANGAREI, Oct. 16. At uie conclusion of the hearing which continued till ten last night, Frederick William Webster ryas committed for trial on nine counts of failing to account for moneys totalling £505, collected on behalf of Whangarei Building Fund. FALSE PRETENCES. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16. The case with which business people give credit was commented on in the Supreme Court to-day, when Joan Bullars McKenzie came up for sentence for obtaining credit by fraud. Counsel described it as “extreme simplicity,” stating that the temptation was put in his way by lax trading, especially in petrol He obtained the petrol cheap and sold it to E. P. Wright at a price that should have given the man who bought it an indication. McKenzie bought 3000 cases. He sold it at 8s to 10s a case. 'He traded in the same way with galvanised iron and sugar. Wright evidently had given very little consideration to the transaction. McKenzie was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention.
