The position to-day certainly, claims more attention, knowing that, the mining industry lias steadily dropped hack, and it remains to have an active -Minister of Mines who carries weight and Pas a remedy to lift the industry iloiAvard as our mining possibilities arc by no means exhausted. Mr Seddon, discussing mining interests, put in a sound plea for -more assistance and encouragement to gold mining and said this is an aspect of mining far too long neglected. The question is revived from time to tine hut without effective icsult. Ilu.e must, in the not distant future, he a definite allocation of tin* Alines .portfolio and it is to he hoped it will he the early task of the new minister to take up the subject referred to with a view of assisting to promote the goldmining interests. Those having the welfare of our district at heart will hail with pleasure the member o! Westland who will urge the necessity of having the Mines portfolio lmwied to one who can devote his time and has the knowledge of the requirements of this district and can give the subject the study it so deserves. Gold mining in the past- peopled and developed New Zealand, and the time has come when the government shou.fl make a substantial move to have a thorough investigation of our wonderful mineral resources.
