GENERAL ELECTION

UNITED CANDIDATE. 'By Telegraph—Press Association). INVERCARGILL, October 12. Mr W. E. Taylor, the United Party’s candidate for Wallace, opened his campaign at Tehaka to-night. He favoured an elective executive. He was opposed to the Bible-in-scliools under the proposed system. Dealing with the licensing question, he said, he favoured a three-issue ■ ballot, and contended that the * number of years between the polls was a matter for the electors. He also advocated the manufacture of spirits in New Zealand, which would save huge sums of money and provide employment for .large numbers of men.

Mr Taylor attacked the Government’s land settlement policy, and expressed the opinion that large areas of the bush lands could he made productive if sub-divided into 200 acre blocks, giving settlers the tfee s simple. He stated that the rural credit system was a complete failure, and said that commercial firms were more capable of financing farmers than the Government, which, to do the job properly, would require-to set up a. separate Department. ■ : .

He blamed the Government, for the present' unemployment position, as it had encouraged over 45,000 immigrants to the Dominion, during the last five', years. LABOURITE FOR WALLACE. INVERCARGILL, October 12. : Mr R, Howell (Riverton) has announced his intention of contesting Wallace seat in the Labour interests.

SIR JOSEPH WARD’S OPPONENT. WELLINGTON. October 12. It is announced that Mr S. M. MacA lister, of Invercargill, a solicitor, will be the Reform candidate against Sir Joseph Ward for that seat. THE ISSUE OF THE WRIT. WELLINGTON, October 12. The writ for the General Election will be issued next Friday, October 19th, states the Prime Minister.
