HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12th. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Pres out:—Messrs («. A. Perry (Mayor), J King, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, G Heinz, E. "W. Meemin and Dr Tcichel ma nn. An apology for absence was received from Mr Armstrong. The minutes were confirmed and out ward correspondence approved. INWARD COR DESPONDENCE.
From Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade, intimating that the United Fire Brigade Demonstration would he hold at Hokitika about the 2(511 1 February next, and asking, (1) for the use of Cass Square for three days for the purpose df holding the demonstration, and (Ti to replace the fire plug in the centre of the Square, and to extend the pipe line as was done at the last Fire Brigade Demonstration held in Hokitika.—Received. Mr Heinz stated that with a view to preventing shock in the pipes, it would be as well to carry a connecting pipe line to Weld Street, and a shock absorber be put in. Mr Evans moved the request be granted, subject to the Public Works Committee making suitable arrangements with the Fire Brigade authorities. Seconded by Mr Jeffries ""4 carried, the Mayor stating' the Council should not put anything in the way of having as successful a 'demonstration as the previous one had been. From N. 0. Fairlie and, C. L. P. It was rsolved to prohibit the taking of sand at this place. From County Clerk, Hok (ika. pointing out that the damage on Slip HiP was primarily caused through the leakage of the Borough water supply pipes, and asking the Council to pay £7 10s half the cost of repairing the road.— Received ; and amount claimed passed for payment. From J. B. Ward, All Saints Church Committee, drawing attention to the state of drain leading from the Vicarage to main drain in Fifizhorbert St.— Received; referred to Town Clerk io explain. From District Engineer, enclosing circular re width of sealing in boroughs and town districts of main highways.— Received.
From Main Highways Board in connection with road repairs.—Received: referred to Foreman for attention.
From L. Gooch, compla'ining of the state of flic footpath in front of his premises.—Received ; referred to Public Works Committee to consult Mr Gooch and report at next meeting.
Mr Duff drew attention to the necessity of attention to the roadway at the corner of Healey and Stafford Streets, to which attention had been drawn some months ago. The complaint was referred to the Overseer to attend to.
REPDRTii? ■ Accounts amounting to £329 9s 9d were passed for payment, 'file Treasurer reported receipts £l9ll 10s lOd, payments £Ol7 10s 3d, credit balance £1992 3s lOd.—'Received. ABATTOIR -REPORT. From Manager of Abattoirs (Mr J. Jarman) reporting during September there were examined—9 calves, 29 heifers, 74 bullocks, 117 sheep, 20 pigs, 8 calves. Condemned 1 calf, 3 bullocks. Fees for period £O7 4s (same, period last year £O3 10s 0d). —Received. FOREMAN’S REPORT. I beg to report the following works were carried out during the month :—■ The Iformer half of the month was occupied in excavating and laying eight and n-lialf chains of four-inch u’pes in Stafford Street, from the cor ner of Rolleston to one and a half' chains past Davie Streets for fire purposes. We laid two and a lifjlf chains pif one inch and a-quarter pipes in Davie Street eonneeting with the main in Hampden Street, forming the circuit. A *fireplug requires to he put in yet, which will be done as soon as it comes to band.
The drains on both sides of the road in this section were cleaned out and twelve 18-inch pipes put in on the north side connecting with the drain running across Davie Street. The footpath in front of Mr Preston’s on the north side was cleared of growth and levelled ready to he gravelled. I The growth was cut in Sale Street on both sides of the road and the drain cleaned out up to M,r Andrew’s property, a distance, of about five chains. The footpath on the east side of Healey Street between Hampden and Park Streets was cleaned ready t> gravl. , The water connection at Mrs Preston’s on Gibson Quay was renewed. On the night df the 18th a pipe burst in Fitzherbert Street, which we repaired by 2 a.m. Several leaks were repaired in different parts of Hie town. Water in the reservoir averaged,ll feet for the month.
FOREMAN’S SPECIAL REPORT. As requested to report on a water supply to the racecourse I beg to suplily (be following particulars:— On the 28th we cut a line from the main to the course, where the bird cage is situated. The distance is lour chains. This is the shortest and best route in mv opinion. This work will require more time than it appears, as the water will have to be cut off at the reservoir, and the main cut to put in a T casting and valve. The town supply would he cut off at least a day and possibly a little longer. The size of the supply pipe to bo four inches, with 100 pounds pressure. After due consideration of maifo’in regard to the renewal of the pipe line, it was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Council to ha'o the pine line renewed with '9in. Hwm> concrete pipes for a distance of 089 foot from the intake at Lake Knrnor 1 with the exception that rivetted irepipes be used from the intake fc whatever distance is considered neecs sary, and that the eort of the nines fittings, and all the work of relaying lie on id out of revenue.
Mr J. C. Macfarlane, Licensed Surveyor, intimated that his lee for checking the pipe line levels for a distance of three miles from the intake would Ik? £lO 10s, and on behalf of the Council your Committee'have accepted his offer, and have requested
him to proceed with the work without 1 delay. —Received and adopted. Mr Jeffries moved that the reeom'j niendation of the report be given effect to and the Town Clerk be authorised to arrange for the supply -" pipes. Seconded by Mr Duff and car lied. ORDER PAPER. Mr Evans moved: “That in view of Hie recurring narrow escapes irom serious accidents involving life and limb at the dangerous railway crossing in Park Street! the New Zealand Rail ways Department be requested again to establish some warning signal o device for the benefit of passing trrt fie in the proximity of due train time. Seconded by the Mayor and carrieMr El cock drew attention to H> need for better lighting of Weld Strep railway crossing. It was resolved to draw Hie attention of the Railway Re /partment to Hie matter. | The Council rose at 8.30 p.m.
