WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

OVERSEER MILLNER’S REPORT. I have the honour to report upon the progress of works for the month of September:— NORTHERN RIDING.

Maintenance.—Repairs were effected to defective culverts, gorse cleared, a 12 inch diameetr'' concrete pipe drain contracted and subsided approaches to to culverts gravelled on Two Mile road. A defective box culvert was removed and replaced with 12 inch diameter concrete pipes 21 ioe't in length on One Mile road near the entrance to Mr A. Bradley’s residence. Flood damage yrepairs were effected by the removal of debris, which checked tire waterway at Greek’s Gully bridge, and a quantity of gravel removed from the channel above the bridge and used lor repairs to Die western approach to the bridge which was badly scoured by the creek overflow. 11. Reynolds, Bridge Foreman, directed repairs to the subsided abutments of Four Mile Creek bridge, Blue Spur-Ara,hura mad, the original ground . sills being replaced with 16 feet hardwood piles obtained from Hungcrford’s bridge, both abutments being lined with Bx 4 planking to retain the earth filling. Portions of \vahlira Valley road were repaired a,nd! gorse cleared where necessary, watertables cleaned, and a portion of Blue Spur-Arahiira Road beyond the Black bridge repaired with gravel.

CENTRAL RIDING. Secondary Highways, Lower Kokntnhi, Koitera.ngi Rond. Maintenance. —Motor worn holes and depressions wore repaired on various sections over a distance of -7 miles, 118 cubic yards of crave! lieing used for the purpose. The large road grader drawn by No. 1 lorry was engaged grading the (pad from the 10 mile peg to Outlet Drain bridge, a distance of 6 miles, one and a half miles of the road being heavily dragged before being graded. The ten ton roller was occupied in rolling in the loose metal collected bv dragging, grading, and patching and completed the rolling over a distance of 51 miles, a further distance of half a mile being partly rolled. Watertables were reooened a distance of ten chains, and 30 cubic yards of gravel was carted out to replenish the roadside dumps. Lower Kokatahi road drain clearing and cleaning, A. Burke, contractor, was completed to 05 chains in a satisfactory manner.

Upper Kokatahi Road.—The new decking for No. 1 Duck Creek bridge, totalling 2,285 superficial feet of 8 x 4 planking, was carted from Kairier i to the bridge by the County lor ries, Lake Knnieri Road.— Encroaching gorse, blackberry a<nd native scrub growth were cleared from the roadside especially'at the curves over a distance of .slightly .more tham one mile ; watertables were cleaned where necessary for a distance of 65 chains. short sections of new drains 18 incites by. 12 inches were excavated to take standing water and prevent the road being flooded during stormy weather. The drains totalling 14 chains in length can be widened and deepened as! circumstances permit. The heavy road drag, drawn by No 2 lorry was used with beneficial results between Boucher’s Terrace and the first bill past the black bridge., a distance of (one -mile. Repairs were effected to motor worn holes and ruts, 57 cubic yards of gravel and 2 cubic, yards of metal used between Lower Kokatahi road junction and the 5 mile peg. Roadside dumps were replenished with 30 cubic yards of gravel. County Roads.—Portions of Arthurstown road were dragged with the heavy road drag drawn by No 2 lorry a.nd motor holes ‘repaired between Pine Tree road and the old ,Borough boundary. A drain was cleaned and excavated on Back Creek road toward the Forestry Plantation, and the worst portions of Lower Back Creek road repaired with gravel between the Diggers mill and the Main Highway. Watertables were cleaned on Hokitika-H'au Han, and gorse cleared from Tucker’s Fiat and Artliurstown roads. Portions of Ruatapu road were repaired with gravel, and defective decking renewed on South Creek bridge. v Tbe upper portion of Municipal road was repaired with gravel, and a, portion of the Hokitika ■Fiat road rolled with the ten ton roller. A defective culvert on Blue Spur road was renewed with 18 inch diameter concrete pipes, and a short section of the upper portion of Blue Sour road repaired with dredge screenings.

SOUTHER N T R TDING. Kakapotn.hi bridge protection was compitted over a distam-e of 300 links end the upper portion extended beyond the bend, strengthened and refund with a lower fascine of manuka senih and continuous wire net. and stone anchor for 72 feet in length. A 1 th ;,r neint the work is r, tlengthened with an upper centre and lower net •d normal water level which should be o ffecteve. Okarito Road Bridges. This work was commenced under the direction cop VBridgc Foreman Reynolds and seven new stringers were removed and rerdaced, also the decking on the first bridge repaired below Okarito Forks. No 2 .lorry was engaged delivering 12 by 12 inch 'diameter and 19 by 18 inch diameter concrete pipes for renewal of defective culverts on Okarito road. Maintenance.—-The Roadman attended to repairs on Petersen’s, Wanganui Flat, and Robertson roads, also

to the removal of timber and debris from the piers of La Fontaine Creek bridge; La Fontaine road and the construction of a quantity of 18 inch diameter concrete pipes. The faulty decking on Rotokino read culverts was repaired with Bx 4 heart of J'imu planking. Repairs wore effected to Detour road,, ‘Wataroa, after dragging and grading between Gunn’s Corner and the Main Highway. The County lorries carted several loads of timber from Knnieri and Kakapotahi to Harihan; a load of bridge gear to Okarito road bridges, and pipes to Wn.tnroa, with timber and pipes to Wait aha Settlement road.
