AMERICAN TRAGEDIES. FAMILY KILLED AT CROSSING.? (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). NEW YORK, Oct. 7. At Delta, Utah, a whole family of eight was killed to-day when a train crashed into an automobile at a. road crossing. FIRE IN GAOL. | NEW YORK, Oct. 7. A message from Junction City, Ohio, states that at least six prisoners in the State Penitentiary were burned to death when a fire destroyed a dormitory in which 270 prisoners were asleep. (Received this day at 9.2.5. a.m.) ’ NEW YORK, Oct. 8. “ We make war on no nation, but we should be ready and able to feel with subsequent regret anj’one asking us,” said Mr Brisbane Hearst in an editorial congratulating the Goverment on placing an order for two dirigibles by far the world’s largest, each carrying live planes for scouting. The editorial adds: A fleet of such dirigibles, each carrying fifty tons of explosives and modern war gas, would be able to unleash a hundred fast destructive planes, which would leave, with Uncle Sam’s compliments, his visiting card m Europe or Asia that would not soon be forgotten.
A POLICE COUP. (Received this day at 10.30. a.m.) VANCOUVER, Oct. 8. Jessie Clark, aged 19, a Canadian girl, whose startling disclosures brought about the arrest of her uncle, Gordon Stuart Northcott, on sensational murder charges, made a dramatic flight at midnight across the border. The girl was bundled into a high powered motor car and disappeared before the officers were aware she had gone. It is reported that agents of Northcott in California .engineered the coup 1 to prevent her giving testimony. Northcott and his mother are awaiting extradition on a charge of murder of four boys on a chicken ranch. A later report indicates that the flight was engineered by the Californian police to prevent any recantation of the statement at the extradition proceedings.

A Junction City report places the number of deaths from the penintentiary fire, at 17. DECORATION FOR VISCOUNT ALLENBY. NEW YORK, Oct. 8. A message from San Antonio (Texas) states that the Distinguished Service Medal of the American Legion was presented to Viscount Allenby at a Convention there to-day.
