CANTERBURY WEATHER, ■* (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) ’ CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 8. Patrols are watching the Waimakariri river in expectation of a heavy flood. Heavy rain is falling at Halkett about twenty miles from Christchurch, but in the city, a fierce north- •" west gaje is raging. Telephone lines between Darfield and Bealey are down. The Waimakariri rose eight feet above normal during the night but this morning was falling again slightly. INQUEST VERDICT. DUNEDIN, Oct. 8. ; At the inquest on: Catherine Willis Begg, whose death occurred near Lawyer’s Head, on October 1, a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. The evidence showed the deceased was the official collector for the natural history .section of the Nationol Museum of Wales and was in the habit of collecting specimens from rocks and pools about the Coast. She was unacquainted with this coast, where there are kelp covered rocks accessible at low tide, but breaker washed, and the indications are she was swept from one of these. Deceased’s shoes indicated a slip.
YOUNG WOMAN KILLED. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 8. Irene Bryant, 20, married, was kill- . ed in a motor accident at Po-rt Levy yestereve through ali lorry which her husband was driving getting out of control and capsizing. Bryant received minor injuries. BUSH FIRES. \ ASHBURTON, Oct. 8, In Staveley district, the gale fanned smouldering bush fires which spreading to half cleared scrub destroyed several outbuildings, though residences were- saved through strenuous , efforts. In one plantation of some 21,000 trees it is estimated that one-third to a half are. down. ALLEGED THEFT. WHANGAREI, Oct. 8. F. W. Webster, whose name was twice previously suppressed by a Justice appeared on remand before Magistrate Luxford at Court to-day, charg- , ed with failing to account for £230, the property of the Whangarei Terminating Building Society. Suppression of his name was refused. Accused was remanded for a week in two sureties of £250. The Senior-Sergeant state nine further counts were pend ing, involving approximately fourteen hundred sterling. • , 1:.
A SERIOUS FIRE. LEVIN, Oet. 8. A serious fire occurred late on Satuv- • ' day night in the premises occupied by I nee and Co. (drapers), G. D. Hamilon (accountant), V. Henderson (tailor), Miss Williams (dressmaker), the three latter occupying the first floor. ; The - fire had a strong hold when the alarm . ...ij was given and though confined to a block where it originated, the stocks and buildings were a total loss. Insurances on Ince’s stock, £5000; fittings £SOO, in South British. Hamilton’s office furniture, £IOO in British Traders. The building belonged to Stiles and Matheson Estate, and was insured for £3OOO in the British Traders. The other tenants were uninsured. The cause of th outbreak is unknown. MAN KILLED. LEVIN, Oct. 8. Thomas Thorn, a labourer, 74, was killed at Wirokino on Saturday by the overturning of a dray he was driving. RHODES SCHOLARS. AUCKLAND,, Oct. 8, Nominations, for Rhodes Scholarships:—E. Minns, final year for 8.A., educated at Auckland Grammar; E. E. Bailey, L.L.8., educated at Sacijed Heart College. Both were born in 1907. Minns ih the Rugbyitq chosen in the first Waratah test.
