CAPTAIN COOK
150th ANNIVERSARY. (By Telegraph—Press Association). GISBORNE, October 8. Representatives of public bodies, and a laro-e gathering of the public, attended at the Cooks’ Memorial on Kititi Beach yesterday afternoon to celebrate the 159th landing of Captain James Cook. A short religious service was (followed by speeches honouring the great navigator and by placing wreaths on the monument. Reference was made to the fact that the ceremony was taking place on the actual site ‘where Captain Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil. Air J. R. Kirk, who presided, read a message from the Chairman and the Council of the Royal Colonial Institute associating themselves with the honour paid to the memory of Captain Cook Messages were also received from the Premier, Hon. Iv. S. AVilliams, and the Returned Soldiers Association. A stirring address was delivered by hi McllNvraith.
