The Australian Council of Trades Unions continues its conference, despite the result of the meeting with Mr Bruce and the employers’ declaration that obedience to the law mu,st precede a conference Between the parties. precautions are being taken to preserve secrecy as to the conference de'iterations. The Garden wing is believed to be losing ground, owing to the suspicion that its activities are really aimed to damage the Labour Party’s political standing.
Arbitration Court Chief Judge Dethridge has refused to suspend the preference clauses of the Beeby Award for the North Queensland ports. He advised the watersiders: “Work! Work! Don’t play the fool!”
FREE LABOUR FIRST. ADELAIDE, Oct. 5. Nearly six hundred Waterside Federation members were picked up this morning hut they had to await the exhaustion of the supply of free labour before they were engaged. AGAINST GOA LING SYDNEY, Oel. 5. Mr Fleming, Secretary of the N.S.W. Branch of the Seamen’s Union, declared to-day that the seamen in Australia will not work under any circumstances with noii-Union labour. He complained that the gaoling of the Fiona seamen at Cairns was a breach of the undertaking given by the Colonial Sugar Company, in order to get a, crow to Lake the ship out of Sydney. Bi : A MEN FTNEIX SYDNEY, Oct. 5. Eight members of tlie crew of the Huddurt Parker steamer Yarra were fined eight days’ pay at Newcastle for disobeying orders at sea.
