THE‘COUNCIL WELLINGTON, October 4. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. yesterday.

After further discussion on a motion by Hon. Mclntyre that the time has arrived wliem. the Government should impose a duty on all imported coal, the motion was withdrawn, the mover asking the Government to watch carefully any move in Australia in the direction of imposing an export subsidy on Australian coal, thus re-acting detrimentally upon the New Zealand coal industry. The Main Highways Amendment Bill, Canterbury Provincial Buildings Vesting Bill, Auckland Grammar School Amendment Bill, and State Fire Insurance Amendment Bill were re' ceived from the House and put through all stages and passed.

Education Reserves Bill was also received from the House, read a first time and second time pro forma and referred to the Lands Committee. The Council adjourned at 3.45 p.m. Until 2.30 p.m. next day. THE HOUSE,'. The House of Representatives put through all stages the Swamp Drainage Amendment Bill, Canterbury College Amendment Bill, Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third Party- Risks) Bill, Opticians Bill, Hospital and Charitable Institutions. Amendment Bill, Electric Wiremen’s Registration * Amendment, and Music Teachers’ Registration Bill. The House rose at 12.30 a.m. till 2.30 p.m. ■ -n o', • /«' -
