MARITIME CONFERENCE
A WARM DISCUSSION. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Received this day at 10.30. a.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 3. Tlie Maritime Conference’s motion cabled yesterday was launched by Garden (Secretary of New South Wales Labour Council. After a long discussion it was referred to a special subcommittee which will furnish its report to the Conference to-day. The amendment also cabled was defeated by a large majority. Scullin and other parliamentarians addressed the Conference. Scullin condemned Garden and other militants for their attempts to extend tlie strike, saying they were urging tlie men to do things they themselves were not prepared to do. He added that a continuance of the strike would certainly disrupt the Laboiur movement and prejudice Labour’s chances at the approaching Federal Elections. The atmospihere been me electrical when about fifty coal trimmers rushed into the conference room and demanded no surrender. Garden influenced the men to leave the hall.
