ELECTION STRATEGY
ALARMING PUBLIC WORKS , FINANCE. (Lyttelton Times Correspondent). WELLINGTON, Oet. 1. “There lias never been anything more staggering than pages of this year’s Public Works Statement,” declared Sir Joseph Ward, in the House to-day. He regarded it as absolutely alarming. The Public .Works resources were put down •at 20 millions, and that was intended as a bait to the people. That m’oney was to bp thrown about to the extent of millions, which everybody knew was impossible. “Yet,” he said, “‘there are- members who' will place their hands on their chest and say, ‘see how much money we have for our electorate.’ If I was talking in my electorate I would tell the people not to believe a word of it.” The Hon A. D. : M’Leod (Minister of Lands) : “I suppose you will he speaking there??’ Sir Joseph Ward: “I will probably do so, ami I hear you are trying your best to put a man up against me, but we cafi put four against' tbe Government, We are in the position to make them lose elections in some parts by not running one ourselves. The people of Invercargill -would deeply regret it if I did riot speak there, and they' JfQuld appreciate the Minister of Lands spelßting there, though they might not belW*#-of what he gays. (Laughter). I shall f-eU the people riot to believe half of it, because js absolutely impossible for the Govern-, merit to give effect to what they are leading .people to believe.”
