TRANSPORT ACT OPERATES, (Australian Press Association); (United Service). ■ - (Received this day at 11.25. a.m.) SYDNEY, October 1. The Transport Workers’ Act operates to-day at Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Fremantle, and at Newcastle to-morrow. The licensing is already proceeding at most ports. A MOMENTOUS CONFERENCE. SYDNEY, October 1. A Union Conference is being'held today at Melbourne, when the strike policy will be defined. It is expected to be the most momentous in the Union’s history, and possibly may precipitate a strike of nation-wide dimen-' sions, involving railway, tramways, all transport facilities and*' food, operatives. All Unions will be called upon (to ! give effect ,to whatever decision is' arrived at. Approximately twenty off the most powerful unions in Australia will f be drawn into the conflict, which will be virtually a fight against the licensing of unionists and the introduction of free labour.
The Conference begins at the Trades Hall- at Mellbourne at 2.30 p.m.

EIRE AT SUGAR FACTORY. (Received this day at 10.30/ a.m.) 1 SYDNEY, Oct. 1. A fire near midnight in a boilerhouse of the Colonial Sugar ' Refining Coy’s premises at Pyrmont; a suburb, caused damaged totalling twenty-five thousand sterling. The outbreak is now under control. The coal bunkers were -well alight when .the , firemen arrived. The fire spread to the machinery which was considerably damaged, but the sugar stacks, jyere; not affected.
THE MAYOR’S HOPES. OF WAY OUT OF TROUBLE. . V * ADELAIDE, Oct. 1. The Mayor of Port Adelaide hopes to-day to suggest a way out of the trouble on the waterside. No additional volunteer labour will, be engage ed until the Unionists have had another chance to offer carriers and drivers. All is idle since the volunteers were chased, from .the wharves. .The handling of wool has ceased. MURDER CHARGE. MELBOURNE, Oct. 1. William Carr, aged twenty-five, was arrested after an exhaustive search in Gippsland hush and charged with murdering Margaret Williams at Wonthaggi, cabled on Friday.
