The police authorities declare the rioting at Port Adelaide was due to hundreds of unemployed linking with the waterside strikers, making nearly five thousand, who took the police completely by surprise. One volunteer was horribly assaulted on the ground. A cargo hook was driven into his/ thigh and then he was kicked. Premier Butler called a special Cabinet meeting, and later declared the Government intended to give volunteers all the protection needed. He stated the Government was determined to stamp out mob rule. BRISBANE, Sept. 28. More than sufficient free labour is offering at Brisbane. ATHLETIC AGREEMENT ENDED. (Received this day at 10.30. a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 27. It is announced here that New Zealand has terminated the agreement with the Amateur Athletic Union of Australia, which existed . since 1897, owing to the Dominion being now recognised as a nations by the International Federation and Olympic Committee.
