Messrs McMahon and Lee notify a.' spring sale of store cattle at Totara Flat Saleyards on Tuesday, Oct. 2nd. at 12.30 p.m. the entry comprising 120 head' of bullocks, heifers and cows. Rumour is current lately that traffic cops are to be used in Hokitika shortly. On enquiry we find that the powers that be in the care of the pedestrian, have decided that on account of the motor traffic in Hokitika on the nig 4, of the Military Ball their use will bo essential for the public safety. Messrs W. Weddel and Co., Ltd., advised dated London, 21st inst. as follows:—“Banish butter 196 s to 199 s (last week 198 s to 200 s); New Zealand unsalted 186 s to 190 s (186 s to 190 s) ; New Zealand salted 182 s to 184 s (182 s to 184 s). Canadian cheese coloured 112 s to 1145.” A Wellington correspondent states the most emphatic sign of the early termination of the session was provided to-day by the Prime Minister’s notice of motion that on and after next [Monday the House of Representatives shall sit on Mondays till the end of the session. There was another plain indication in the unexpected presentation of the Public Works Statement. Members expect to complete their labours some time next week, and to have about six weeks in which to carry out the election campaign. Tills places the general election date at about Wednesday, November 14, but if the session is prolonged beyond the anticipated limit there may be a revision of the election date, as the Prime Minister has not yet committed himself to any specific statement. The remaining order paper is light and there should be no difficulty in carrying out the timetable, which is generally accepted in the lobbies.
The weather last night continued boisterous, but this morning there was a considerable improvement, the wind having died down ■ and the sun shining intermittently for a while.
A clause in the Local Legislation Bill, now before Parliament, allows tiie Grey mouth Borough District Fund to meet the liabilities arising out of the recent Jubilee celebrations.
The Kpkatahi Tennis Club to commemorate the opening of the season, are holding a ball in the Public Hall, Kokatahi, on Wednesday, Oct. 17th. Further particulars r© this event will appear later. A dispute has arisen at the Westport Main Mine over the question df whether the miners should work at the outcrop workings on wet days, and also as to whether certain conditions hitherto secured by the men shall be retained. The West Coast Miners’ Council will on Saturday hold a special meeting at Westport to deal with the matter. The (clause in the Auctioneers Bill as originally introduced in the House of Representatives providing for lots to be sold to the highest bidder at sales of fish, shellfish, fruit, or ve-ge-tab’es, but which was thrown out on the recommendation of the Statutes Revision Committee, has been reinserted by the. Agricultural and Pastoral Committee 'of the Legislative Council. The motor ship Zingara, which left Wellington on Wednesday of last week for Hokitikai, was off here on Monday mronng, but .then ran back to Westport for shelter, arriving in the evening, and after laying outside at, the Steeples till this morning, being unable to enter the Buffer river, she left for Nelson. Five other -vessels were outside Westport, being unable to enter the harbour there.
The annual ball held under the auspices of the local Druids Lodge took place at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening. The extremely boisterous ’ night affected the attendance, but in spite of this those present spent a very enjoyable time. The floor was in perfect order, the supper arrangements were complete, while capital music was Supplied by Goodfellows’ Orchestra. Prancing was kept up with vigor until an early hour.
At a meeting of the Grey Power Board last bvning, the following motion was carre id: “ That the Board approves of the policy providing further generating capacity, and since the time is now ready for such extension, that Messrs Vickerman and Lancaster be asked to proceed' with the necessary work preparatory to taking a poll, and that a poll of ratepayers be taken on the proposal to borrow £IIB,OOO for the purpose of development of the Arnold River scheme as soon as practicable. Further that the draft agree-, ment as submitted be approved of and be signed up forthwith.
The annual meeting of the Grey Acclimatisation Society was held on Tuesday evening, when the president (Mr P. -Beck) presided. Officers were elected as follows President, Mr P. Beck; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Dickson, C. Mori, E. M. Holmes, A. Ogilvie, and H. Bringezu; Council members: Dr W. McKay, Messrs H. C. Garde, J. Smith, A. H. Millner, R. Webber, T. Crankshaw, E. Heinz, I. Bennington, P. C. Heaphy, B. Holmes, Dumbleton, J. Hill, Ninvmo, G. Hall, G. McPherson, and *N. Peat. Mr, P. <C. Heaphy was re-appointed auditor. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet, which were adopted, shoved the Society’s affairs to be in a very flourishing condition. The cash in the bank totalled £IOOO, bn increase of £BO on last year’s amount.
