Not long ago, when' unemployment was much discussed, it was shown beyond cavil that the thousands talked of glibly did not always materialise when compilation of the actual roll of- men out of work and seeking employment was undertaken. How much more certainly would this be so if anybody alleging “hundreds” of men starving on the country roads were asked to produce a definite statement and submit it to analysis. There have been unemployment and distress in this country. Nobody denies it. Admitting it, admitting it should not be so, the people of New Zealand should still remember, especially by the last instance, what use of the situation has been made, for political and propaganda purposes, to the detriment of their country’s good name,—“New Zealand Herald.”
