(By 1 Arence.’), The Annual Ball of the Boss Fire Brigade took place here on Friday night last and despite the heavy rain in the afternoon and evening, a failcrowd was present. The music Ivas supplied by Boss’ Orchestra and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr lv. Richards. Owing to the death, of Mrs Wallace, at Harihari, the Ball at Wailio Gorge, in aid of the Anglican Church Fund, that was to have been held on Monday night last, has been postponed until October Bth. Mr J. MaMillan, schoolmaster at Waitaha, has forwarded his resignation to the Education Department, and leaves Waitaha at the end of the month for Ashburton. He lias been teaching at Waitaha for years and to show their esteem the residents are giving a socail in his honour on Friday night. . ) Mrs McMillan senr. who has been

Boisterous weathgr was experienced here early this morning, rain falling very heavily, while' further south, as far as Harihari, heavy hail storms have been experienced, the hail in some instances being as largo as. marbles. At Matainui. and AVaiho, the ■ lower levels have been under snow, which fell thickly all the morning, the surrounding hills being covered.
