COMPETITIONS SOCIAL

A very successful social was held at the Soldiers’/ Hall last evening as a wind up to the Competitions festival. There was a large attendance and the proceedings were very enjoyable. The first part consisted of ail impromptu concert in which the following took part: Pinaforte soies, Misses G.” Jacobs, M. Stopforth; Monologues, Misses G. Appleton, N. Woods; Recitations, Misses A. Stephens) M. McGriviii, Joy Ward, E. Fowler, N. Wormihgton and Master P. McGavin; Songs, Misses A. Lynn, L. Knight, C. Wylie, R. Morgan; sc’o dancing, Misses F. Hall, C. Staines and H. Staveley; ballet, Misses stavely, McWhirtcr, Staines and Stevenson. All the perforators were well received and their efforts loudly, applauded. AccompanL merits were supplied by 'Misses Daly and Stopforth, Mrs Staveley'and Master'. Staveley.' A number of .trophies and prizes wore presented by the President (Mr Evans) who thanked tho Competitors for their support a ( the Competitions, and stated the success of the demonstration concerts was confirmatory appreciation of the all round excellence of the work. Mr Evans stated the annual meeting of the Society would .be held on Tuesday evening, October 16th. and he hoped there' would be a large attcndaiTce of well wishers, so as to strengthen, the Society as much as possible!'” ■

In'presenting the trophies, Mr Evans congratulated the Convent School for its continued success in the choral numbers, and tho action songs, and hoped next year other entrants would assist in mailing these items even more popular. The President also congratulated St. Andrews choir on winning the .shield and hoped there would he increased competition next year, when the new entrants would give the holders good competition. The Newman Oup went to tho Convent, also the Society’s banner. St. Andrew’s choir won the shield. Aliss A. Stephens received Afr Bush’s trophy for elocution, and Aliss C. Staines, the special from Mrs Hannan for the character dance. The rose bowl for Indies went to Aliss Evans, of Ross, and the Seddon Oup to Afr AlcGrath, of Greyriiouth. Miss Rita Morgan is to receive Afr Moss’ special for singing. The President also made a. presentation to Aliss Daly, on behalf of the Committee, acknowledging very gratefully the services of Aliss Daly as official accompanist. The Rovd. Knowles Smith, Vie-e-President, said that while he was pleased with the Competitions in many respects lie regretted there was one aspect not 'so pleasing. That was the lack of entries on the part of young men, and hoped tho cause for that complaint would be removed next year. He was satisfied tbe ability was here if the young men wotihl conic for-

ward. Mr A. G. Pilkington, in acknowledging the shield on behalf of St. Andrew’s Choir, congratulated the Society on the success of the Comi>etitions. He hoped to see tlie choir contests a special feature of live annual festival, and thought if all the vocal members of the community"joined their respective choirs-there -would be. no doubt as to the result and tbe effect on tbo choral work. Supper was served at 9.30, over 200 sitting down. The ladies’ committee had a .plentiful supply of refreshments. A. social dance followed, and continued .till' midnight, good music being supplied by volunteers, and tbe floor was kept fully occupied.
