NURSES HOME BURNT. (By Telegraph—liar Press Association.) GISBORNE, September 19. The nurses homo at Tepiiia Hospital, Toltoniaru Bay, was totally destroyed by fire lust night. Considerable difficulty was experienced by a bucket brigade in saving tlio main hospital, portion of which was badly scorched. A fortunate cliango of wind saved tlio institution.

■ AN .INQUEST. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 19. The inquest on tlio dentil of William Sherlock, a railway ganger at Tokomimi, who was struck by tho main trunk express on the afternoon of September 7th, was held this morning. The driver of the train, Potor Salter, said the deceased was noticed on a velocipede 150 yards away. The train was travelling at 45 to 50 miles an hour. Ho blew the whistle and applied the emergency brakes. A head wind was blowing the smoke Lack to tlio cab, obscuring vision. Deceased got off and was apparently trying to get the velocipede off the lino when the train struck him. Other evidence was given that deceased said that when trying to get the jigger off the line Lis 'foot stuck in the handle. Tlio Coroner’s verdict stated that from evidence it would seem the onus was on the ganger, not to bo on tho line when a train was approaching. A verdict of death in accordance with tho medical evidence was returned.

HOCKEY INCIDENT SETTLED. ■CHRISTCHURCH, September 19. Following a meeting of the management committee of of the Canterbury Hockey Association it was announced tlmt “R. H. Down has apologised to Mr Davey, who lias accepted bis apology and expressed a wish to withdraw his letter of complaint to the Association. In vciw of this the management committee unanimously decided to rescind the previous resolution. The incident is therefore closed in a manner creditable to all parties concerned.” A CORRECTION. The Tutanekai had a very rough crossing of Kaipara ibar when leaving for Onehunga at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and was swept by a. heavy sea which tore off or badly bent all the railings on the forward deck, also all tile ventilators on the same . deck, and one awning. Most of the cabin were filled with water. Some woodwork on tile port sido was smashed and injuries were sustained by two firemen who received medical attention at Onehunga which was reached at 3 p.m.

MID-CANTERBURY SEAT. WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. An announcement was made by the Prime Minister to-day in regard to the Reform candidate 'for the mid-Canter-bury sent at the General Election. “ I have received advice from Hon. W. Noswoi-thy,” said Mr Coates, “that lie does not now intend to contest'the seat and consequently the arrangements made previously between Hon. Noswortliy and Mr D.‘Jones, M.P., will stand. Tlie latter will, therefore, be the official Reform candidate.” “.In view of Hon. Noswortliy s long period of service both to the district and to the dominion, I feel sure that the in Lima lion of his retirement from the active political arena will he received with regret by bis many friends. This regret, I need hardly say, is shared by myself and other colleagues in the Government. “ I may point out, however, that a very large portion of the Ellesmere electorate has been included in the now mid-Canterbury district and that in the present member for Ellesmere the electors of mid-Cantrebury will have as a government candidate, a man who would by his wide public experience, worthily represent them m Parliament.”
